StrongerU’s Monthly Engagement Toolkit: August 2026

Sunshine, Simplicity, and Savoring Summer!

August has a unique kind of magic. The days are long, the pace feels a little slower, and there is still time to enjoy the simple moments that make summer special.

This month, take the opportunity to help residents slow down, connect with others, and savor the season. Whether it’s enjoying a morning coffee outdoors, sharing stories over a backyard barbecue, planting flowers, listening to summer music, or celebrating the little things that bring joy, meaningful engagement often comes from simple experiences.

At StrongerU, we believe that the best programs don’t always require elaborate planning or complicated activities. Sometimes the most memorable moments come from sunshine on your face, a good conversation, a favorite song, or time spent together.

Summer is a season worth celebrating, Let’s make the most of it!

August 2026 Engagement Inspiration: Sunshine, Simplicity, and Savoring Summer!

1. Summer Bucket List Challenge: Make Every Day of Summer Count: Create a community summer bucket list filled with simple experiences residents can enjoy throughout the month.

  • Watch the sunrise or sunset

  • Enjoy a picnic outdoors

  • Create your own lemonade

  • Make a summer playlist

  • Take a nature walk

  • Play a backyard game (corn hole, ladder golf, horse shoes, bocce ball, etc)

  • Write a postcard to someone special

  • Share a favorite summer memory

Engagement tip: Create this list with your community and invite residents to take and submit selfies of activities as they complete them. Create a slide show or wall of photos featuring the summer memories being made.

Make it interactive: Invite staff and families to contribute ideas and join residents for activities

2. Sunshine Socials: Bringing the Outdoors In (and Residents Outside!): Enjoy summer social that celebrates the sights, sounds, and flavors of the season.

  • Outdoor coffee hour

  • Make your own specialty lemonade or iced tea bar

  • Fresh fruit tasting

  • Live music

  • Lawn games

  • Flower arranging

  • Patio conversations

  • Summer trivia

  • Sharing summer memories

    • Their favorite childhood summer activity

    • Their best vacation memory

    • A summer recipe passed down through generations

    • Their favorite summer song

    • A lesson they learned during summer

Add a theme:

  • 🌻 Sunflower Social

  • 🍋 Lemonade on the Lawn

  • 🍉 Watermelon Festival

  • 🌅 Sunset Social

Engagement tip: Focus less on the number of activities offered and more on creating an atmosphere where residents feel relaxed, welcomed, and connected.

3. Slow Summer Strolls: Discovering the Beauty Around Us: One of the greatest gifts of summer is the opportunity to slow down and notice the little things we often overlook. This month, invite residents to become explorers in their own community by embarking on "Slow Summer Strolls.". Instead of focusing on distance or physical ability, this program encourages participants to engage their senses, observe nature, and appreciate the simple beauty of the season.

  • Nature scavenger hunt (find a feather, butterfly, pinecone, unique flower, bird, interesting cloud, etc.)

  • Birdwatching

  • Leaf and flower pressing

  • Photography walk (using phones, tablets, or disposable cameras)

  • "Five Senses" mindfulness walk

  • Outdoor sketching or watercolor painting

  • Cloud watching and storytelling

  • Collect natural objects to create a seasonal display

Engagement Tip: Encourage residents to take their stroll sometime over the course of a week and allow residents to complete discoveries at their own pace. Participants can work individually, with friends, or alongside family members during visits. Cap the week with residents sharing what they discovered on their strolls.

4. Special Dates, Themes and other Highlights

Not every holiday, awareness day, or themed day needs a program or event attached to it. Thoughtful programming isn’t about keeping up with every date on the calendar, it’s about choosing what truly aligns with your group, your team’s capacity, and your community’s values.

Quality over quantity isn’t a shortcut. It’s a good practice to maintain your capacity and to continue to do amazing things for your group. When we give ourselves permission to say no to some things, we create space to do less things with more impact.

Below is an overview of August holidays, awareness days, and special events:

  • August: Family Fun Month, National Wellness Month, Happiness Happens Month by Society of Happy People.

5. StrongerU’s Movement Moments: StrongerU’s Movement Moments are brief movement-based activities designed to help increase energy, connection, and participation. It’s not about exercise intensity—it’s about creating an inviting start to a program. Movement Moments can be done seated or standing and work well at the beginning, or middle, of any activity, class, or social event.

Access the Movement Moment for August and receive alerts every time there is a new Movement Moment here.

StrongerU’s Movement Moments can be integrated:

  • At the start of a morning program

  • During a break in a class or workshop

  • As a playful energizer before a social event

Movement Moments are meant to be short, simple, and adaptable for all abilities—helping your group feel more open, connected, and energized.

This month’s Movement Moment features a cardio warm up track to Soul Man by Sam & Dave from one of our StrongerU Cardio classes.

Looking Ahead

Each month, this blog series will continue to provide:

  • Seasonal and thematic program ideas

  • Special event inspiration

  • One featured Movement Moment that fits seamlessly into any program

Our goal is to support programming that feels purposeful, sustainable, and genuinely engaging to help move beyond routine and into meaningful connection.
