StrongerU’s Monthly Engagement Toolkit: May 2026

Connection, Contribution, and Moving into the Season!

May brings a natural sense of momentum. With warmer weather, longer days, and more opportunities to be outdoors, residents often feel ready to reconnect with one another, with their community, and with a renewed sense of purpose.

For Activity and Therapeutic Recreation professionals, May is an opportunity to design programs that harness this energy while remaining inclusive, flexible, and easy to implement. This month’s ideas are meant to support meaningful participation across care levels while encouraging connection, contribution, and joy.

At StrongerU, we believe thoughtful program design helps communities turn seasonal shifts into experiences that enhance well-being and belonging.

May 2026 Engagement Inspiration: Connection & Contribution

1. Outdoor & Nature-Based Programs: When weather allows, outdoor programming can have a powerful impact on mood and engagement.

  • Garden Walks & Talks: Guided strolls focusing on plants, flowers, or memories

  • Take everything outside: There’s no greater addition to any program than fresh air and sunshine! This is the perfect time of year to move programs outdoors before it gets too warm. Some examples to move outside:

    • Fitness Classes

    • Outdoor Painting

    • Music and Entertainment

    • Coffee and Conversation Groups

2. Movement That Supports Independence: May is a great time to focus on functional movement and confidence.

  • Balance & Mobility Workshops: Offering education and fitness opportunities that focus on balance, mobility, and falls prevention. This is a great time to talk to your group about footwear and hydration.

  • Walking Groups: Plan a special “Walking Club” kick off. Offer special refreshments like smoothies following the inaugural stroll. Matching t-shirts can be a great way to foster community and connection.

3. Meaningful Contribution & Purpose: Contribution-based programs strengthen identity, community pride, and create strong feelings of value and belonging.

  • Community Kindness Projects: Create small cards, crafts, or care packages to deliver to those in need or in the hospital. Paint and plant “Kindness Rocks” nearby and throughout the community.

  • Advisory Circles: This is a great time of year to get your group involved. Even though it’s your job to plan and deliver exceptional programs, getting your group to do some of the brainstorming, research, and even execution is a great way to provide meaningful engagement and purpose. Invite your group to provide ideas, feedback, and help with execution by joining an Advisory Circle. Some examples include:

    • Creative Programming Advisory Circle: A group that recommends ideas for artistic and other creative programs.

    • Outing Advisory Circle: A group that helps provide ideas and research logistics for community outings

    • Special Event Advisory Circle: A group that recommends ideas for special event themes and entertainment.

    • Giving Back Advisory Circle: A group that recommends ideas for identifying meaningful ways to give back within the community and beyond.

  • Mentorship or Story Sharing Sessions: Partner with local schools for residents to share life lessons or skills.

4. Special Dates, Themes and other Highlights

Not every holiday, awareness day, or themed day needs a program or event attached to it. Thoughtful programming isn’t about keeping up with every date on the calendar, it’s about choosing what truly aligns with your group, your team’s capacity, and your community’s values.

Quality over quantity isn’t a shortcut. It’s a good practice to maintain your capacity and to continue to do amazing things for your group. When we give ourselves permission to say no to some things, we create space to do less things with more impact.

Below is an overview of May holidays, awareness days, and special events:

  • May: Mental Health Awareness Month, Older Americans Month (US)

  • May 4th: Star Wars Day

  • May 5th: Cinco de Mayo

  • May 6th to 12th: National Nurses Week

  • May 10th: Mother’s Day

  • May 10th – 16th: National Skilled Nursing Care Week (US)

  • May 16th: Armed Forces Day (US)

  • May 18th: Victoria Day (CA)

  • May 25th: Memorial Day (US)

5. StrongerU’s Movement Moments: StrongerU’s Movement Moments are brief movement-based activities designed to help increase energy, connection, and participation. It’s not about exercise intensity—it’s about creating an inviting start to a program. Movement Moments can be done seated or standing and work well at the beginning, or middle, of any activity, class, or social event.

Access the Movement Moment for May and receive alerts every time there is a new Movement Moment here.

StrongerU’s Movement Moments can be integrated:

  • At the start of a morning program

  • During a break in a class or workshop

  • As a playful energizer before a social event

Movement Moments are meant to be short, simple, and adaptable for all abilities—helping your group feel more open, connected, and energized.

This month’s Movement Moment features a warm up from our special “Here Comes Summer” themed class.

Looking Ahead

Each month, this blog series will continue to provide:

  • Seasonal and thematic program ideas

  • Special event inspiration

  • One featured Movement Moment that fits seamlessly into any program

Our goal is to support programming that feels purposeful, sustainable, and genuinely engaging to help move beyond routine and into meaningful connection.
